Below are some minor achievements and future goals:

Achievements
- I received a number of interesting documents from Kathleen, many of which actually confirmed information from my previously troublesome primary document. I hated to think that Grandma Maureen had it wrong, so I'm glad there was some confirmation.
- I have the phone number and email of another relative (a cousin of Grandma) who will have some interesting insight into more remote generations and branches of the family tree. He is the only child of a couple who had him later in life. Always helpful.
- Kathleen and I also enlisted her Aunt Ellen, another one of Grandma's cousins, who has been working on Cunniff(e) genealogy for years. The idea was also proposed to create a narrative about that branch of my family. I would love to do that and give it as a Christmas gift in the future to my father and his siblings.
- I came to the realization that the McGee's are also difficult to research because the generations preceding my father did not have long lives. Considering that my father was only a year old when his grandfather passed (at the age of 56), it stands to reason that a lot of stories remain untold.

Goals
- To make a spreadsheet of the information I currently have and figure out what information is missing exactly. It would be quite comprehensive.
- Devise a set of specific questions to ask family members in order to record stories and other information. Previous work completed in oral history has proven to me that the more specific the question, the more rich the answers tend to be.
- Continue filling in the sheets from Family Tree Online, which have proven very helpful to this point.
- Compile and scan family photos for both preservation purposes and to make my eventually narrative semi-illustrated. The adage that "a picture is worth a 1000 words" means even more in genealogical research.

I'll edit this post later to add a picture.

Reaching Out

After a week's worth of intensive genealogical research on Ancestry.com's Library Edition (which is what I have access to), I have decided to get some help filling in some of the initial holes.

Facebook can be a beautiful thing. I posted a plea for assistance as my status and got almost immediate results. My father's cousin (2nd cousin, I suppose) Kathleen is the keeper of family stuff in the Baby Boomer generation. She sent me not only new info (including some dates and information about her direct line. Her grandfather and my great-grandmother were siblings), but also other people who have the same interest and could be of some help.

I now know the following:

- My great-great-grandfather died of carbon monoxide poisoning, due to an extinguished pilot light.

- Some of my relatives came over on the Alaska in 1888, the year of one of the worst winters on record in the United States.

- I have traced my grandfather's mother's side of the family to almost 1800 in Ireland.

- My great-great-uncle was a golf champion who taught the New York Yankees to golf in the 1950s and 1960s.

I am still struggling with:

- Both the McGee and the Bell lines. With names as common as those, and first names as common as "John" and "William," I'm having difficulty creating effective search parameters.

- I can't seem to get too many concrete dates.

- Information from a primary document of my grandmother's is not matching other information, nor is the other information matching itself.

- My printer is acting up and not letting me print / scan. Grr.

Reaching out to Kathleen and the family is one of the best things I've done thus far. It is also nice to have an excuse to chat with these relatives, because I don't get to see them very often. Aside from this genealogy project, I'm at midterms with both schools and I'm preparing for a regional academic conference with a totally different research project (The Magic Kingdom's changing depiction of history and the influence Walt Disney has on this viewpoint). I always have a lot of "irons in the fire," as it were, and I'm usually happiest when working on a variety of projects, both academic and leisure.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Again.

So much has changed, and my blogs are definitely reflecting that. I have met many of the goals I wanted to, as well as worked towards others. However, the goals are only a secondary part of this blog.

I have always been interested in my family's genealogy, as well as the art of genealogy in general, and a few years ago, I wanted to start working on my family tree. I had worked on my theatre group's "tree" a number of years ago, but obviously my real tree has a lot more purpose. The theatre tree helped me learn how to do the research in a confined and focused setting, teaching me about using non-traditional sources to conduct research. This has served me well in my journey into the family past.

My uncle, or my mother's brother, has done extensive work on my maternal side's history, so I have decided to focus my research on my father's side, which holds a lot of mystery due to the lack of living relatives. Fortunately, the McGee's and their branches love to talk, so I have a lot of resources in the current generations.

To begin my search, I just filled in the people I could into an ancestory.com family tree. I spoke mainly to my father to fill in blanks. Now I am using a free trial subscription to Ancestory.com's Library Edition (through La Salle University) to do extensive data research. I have discovered so many things. It's positively overwhelming.

This blog's primary purpose will be to reflect on my research methods, as well as telling some of the most interesting tales from my family. It will also help me remember my steps and where I am missing information.

After a trip to Staples this morning, I purchased a 2" binder and heavy-duty Avery tabs. I need these supplies to last me a long time, as well as withstand whatever travel I might need to make. I hope one day I can do some international traveling to my family's homelands (England and Ireland) to trace the family even further back.

I hope I can help other genealogists on their journeys' as well.

Above: My grandma and grandpa on their wedding day, June 26, 1950.

I'm on my way...

I know I haven't written on here in a while, but goals are being achieved.

- I am going to North Carolina to visit my sister this weekend.
- I have been officially accepted to the Mid-Atlantic American Studies Conference.
- I was also accepted to a conference in New Orleans (another state goal).
- I got engaged!
- I'm doing well in school and on track to graduate in August.
- I'm going on a New England road-trip this summer.
- I'm performing in an Improv 101 show for alumni.
- I have more or less conquered my acne with medication and a new skin care routine.

So, I'm not so behind.

64. In this situation though, it is simply imitation as the sincerest form of flattery. What an incredible idea! I picked slightly different numbers though for a variety of reasons. First, I wanted the number to be significant. 2008 was a big year for me, so why not commemorate it? Also, one section of 50 goals pertain just to traveling in the United States, so I needed to compensate for that. It's about 5 and half years, so I'm putting the end date at January, 2014. Some of these goals are little...some are huge. Whatever the size, I will attempt to document each one as best I can.

Here it is:

Gettin' Schooled
1. Earn Master's Degree in American Studies
2. Have a paper published
3. Present at the Mid-Atlantic American Studies Conference in Elizabethtown
4. Week. Ever!

This week has been the best week ever...and it's only getting better.

Friday, Last: Went out with some fun people from school and had my first really good barhopping experience. Not to say that the others were bad, just sorta lame.

Saturday, Last: Amy's grad party, which was sweet. Strawberry daquiris, tubing on the Delaware, and fireworks! Amy's family is fantastico and it was good to see some Masque people again.

Sunday: The IHOR and friends Sunday night movie tradition continues. A crew of us went to see "Ratatouille" which was wayyy better than seeing "Evan Almighty" the weekend prior.

Monday: Monday is always great because of Quizzo. It was also the last Day ONE, which was sorta good (the kids were kinda sucking at this point...). I won the medal for having won the most end-of-the-day cheers, tied with Michelle and Michal. Woo. Also, we studied all day for Quizzo, reading the blog, looking up things that might come up, and we did really well. The first round was meh, but in the 2nd round, we thought we did well and jokered (for those of you who don't play quizzo at the Dark Horse, that means prior to the scoring portion of the round, you can risk doubling your points...you can only do it once per game.). Well, not only did we do well, but we went 10 for 10, doubling for 20! Also, we knew our Transformers and did well in the speed round because of it (the theme for the 3rd round was: Autobot or Decepticon). I felt especially happy that we did better than the team who comes everyweek called "The Decepticons". We did well in the 4th round, totalling at 32 out of about 43 possible points. My team and I (this week called: The Gryffindors), are studying again for next week, which is the 100th Dark Horse Quizzo. Daniel Radcliffe was also on Leno, making my night.

Tuesday: HARRY POTTER AT MIDNIGHT! It was fantastic. I was in awe. Also, I got to see it with some of my favorite people from all aspects of my life. Panda (also known as one A. Smith) came with me and my la salle people to what was easily the craziest movie going experience ever.

Wednesday: After work, it rained. I got soaked. I changed into warm jammies (yay!) and watched TV until 6, whence it was time for another installment of "Nachos with Nicole". Most of the RC's stopped by, as well as summer staff. Nicole makes a mean nacho and an even meaner guacamole. I went back to my room to watch Daniel Radcliffe on Conan. Bed as Thursday is...

Thursday: BREAKFAST AT IHOP! I love the rooty-tooty fresh and fruity breakfast, with apples. yum. alot of the RC's and summer staff came to say a final good-bye to Michal, who leaves for Poland today. The ride home was hellish. Scott had to drive around a garbage truck, almost bottoming out. After I was safely at work, I had lunch outside on the union patio for the first time in about a week. It was simply too hot to eat outside for about the entire month of July. I called Aunt Rosemary and my grandparents and my mom. After work it was time for HARRY POTTER 5: PART DEUX. in this episode, Nicole gets very lost on the way to King of Prussia and we could only shop for about 30 minutes. boo. The movie was just as good as the first time and dinner was great (I love steak and mashed potatos). Serena slept over and all was well. Emma Watson was on Conan. Yay!

Tonight I'm going out with lots of people for Sara's 21st birthday (finally!) and Sunday is the Decembrist's concert. Life is good.

mc...out!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://megan-colleen.blogspot.com/2007/07/best-week-ever.html' title='Best. Of course, we also have off on the customary Monday as well. We Day ONE hosts took full advantage of this, mind you. We had folder stuffing on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, because apparently, it took last years hosts four days to stuff 1600 folders. However, our group is quite organized and efficent, so it only took us a little less than two days. A proper assembly line helped us reach our goal and Carolyn told us that if we did finish early, we could take Thursday off. I could have worked in the office, but Michal is going to be there, and although that is fun, there will be nothing for me to do and today is supposed to be B-E-A-utiful. George, Cait, and whoever else are going to Rittenhouse Square (again!) for a day in the park. I also have duty tonight, but that's in Basils so I'm not worried.

Tomorrow is pay day. Yay!

Run down of the week so far:

Saturday: I had duty in Katherines and I got no sleep.

Sunday: I got up and worked on the Masque Tree...all day.

Monday: Parent folder stuffing until 2:45, I had to give a transfer tour at 2:00, and I got to be home in time to watch Ellen and see the Harry Potter clip. I colored in the Masque tree. At 7:30, Amy showed up to drop her stuff off before Jess picked us up for Quizzo for Amy's b-day. We came in third, which is really just the first set of people who don't win anything. We stayed at the Dark Horse for a while (that place really clears out after Quizzo ends) and Amy and I had our sleepover, which basically consisted of chatting and watching The Empire Strikes Back.

Tuesday: Community Development office day. Michal was supposed to come in with me, but at the last minute, he had to go and get interviewed for a documentary about this program he is involved in and it took forever. It's ok though because the people who work in CD are hilarious and they keep me very amused (and busy) all day. It is quite an improvement over working at Continuing Studies. Also, from my time at Continuing Studies, I have learned how to amuse myself because I never worked with other student workers. I came home and watched Return of the Jedi and napped. I have become re-obsessed with Star Wars since my parents brought them to me at school. Michal made me and the RC Nicole dinner, which was delicious. He made stuffed mushrooms for Nicole, and Nachos. The Nachos were amazing and very simple and I'll probably make them myself soon. I also tried guacomole for the first time and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It was homemade by Nicole in the Magic Bullet, so perhaps I'll try my hand at it when I get home.

Wednesday: Student folder stuffing day. We worked very dilegently until 11:00, when Alan (one of our bosses) came to pick us up and take us to be the student representatives at the West Campus opening ceremonies. It was pretty neat and there was AMAZING food there afterward. Sandwiches, and lots of little finger foods, such as mozzerella balls, bread with cream cheese and pesto, shrimp, and fruit. We returned to...lunch hour! After that, we put our rears in gear and finished the folders by 3:15. I didn't really feel well when I came back, so I took a nap, felt better and went to Amanda's to hang out. When Cait got back from her sister's concert thing, we hung out too. Cait and I also started our quote board, which is sweet.

Well...that's it for right now. I'm done with the Masque tree for a while, thank goodness. I'm obsessed with Star Wars (there's even a wiki just about Star Wars...its a little creepy, but I still check it out). Nothing else new to report.

TO THE PARK!

m.c.

Duuuuuty!

Hello faithful readers (or as I like to call you: "Mom")

Well, the days since Tuesday have been fairly exciting.

Wednesday: 80 billion degrees, slighty breezy.
Wednesday was the day that the Day ONE hosts taped our awesome welcome video. We started at La Salle, then...to the van! Our first stop was the mural at 20th and Conclin that La Salle helped with through its mural class this past semester. It's really nice looking. Scott did his presentation and we were off to the city! Michelle did her spot at Boathouse Row, as she is on crew, and to be frank, if I had a reason to be there, I'd be there all the time. It's really nice and neato down there. Next was Michal's segment at the Art Museum, but there was scaffolding all over the front of the building, so he did his at the new Rocky statue in front of the museum. Matt (our trusty cameraman), taped us all running up the stairs, although half way up, Cait, Serena and I decided that there was no reason to go the whole way up. We tried to be funny all day, but I have a feeling that the freshman won't find us terribly funny. We crack ourselves up though. Next, Cory had his moment at Love Park, which is another place in Philly I had never been before. The fountain wasn't on yet, although as we discovered very suddenly at 10:30, it came on in full force at 10:30 am, scaring the beejeezus out of most of us, and making Cory irate, since he had just finished his tape. Cait did her presentation at the Kimmel Center and the Avenue of the Arts, and George and I danced in the background, which was fun for me. Serena did hers in front of the shops on Chestnut Street. As we were pulling up to Arch Street to tape my segment (at the Betsy Ross House), we hit a car, taking off its one light and part of the mirror. I went and taped my segment, where there was tons of kids, and you really couldn't see the fountain, which is my favorite part, but Matt made sure it still looked cool. Sarah did her segment at the end of the street at City Tavern, where she actually got one of the period-dressed waiters to stand with her. It was hilarious. Finally, we ended the day at Pat's Steaks (again!) where I ordered for myself, and George did his segment (and ate 2 cheesesteaks in the time it took me to eat my one). We also drove to South Philly to Tony Lukes, sort of as a reward for finishing taping early. We also taped some filler material at the stadiums with the van. We couldn't tape inside, but we taped us in the parking lot pointing at all the different sports centers.

I was exhausted, but I had duty at 6, so I couldn't go to sleep. I hung out with Cait for a while, then trooped through campus rounds and set up shop in Cassian Hall. I watched "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" and "Music and Lyrics", which made the time between rounds go quickly.

Thursday, I sold my soul to La Salle. I worked from 9 to 4 at Community Development, then I was on duty again at 6, but this time in Basil. Campus Rounds took a long time, but once I got back, duty was fun. Cait, Michal and I watched Grey's (and the "Davey Sullivan moves his crap to his new room down the hall" parade), then did rounds with our capes (and Scott). Finally, I ended the night with Michal covering for me so I could go to Wawa at midnight. I hadn't been out all day. I got a sandwich, because I hadn't really had a proper dinner, since campus rounds took 2 hours, so it was good. I also got some drinks to have in my room for the weekend.

Pay day is next Friday, and as I just found out, we get paid for a lot more than I thought. The only thing I don't get paid for is RA stuff, as that's what gets me my free housing. Training, office hours, and Day ONE stuff gets me paid AND I worked 15 and half hours on Sunday for Angie. Its exciting. Also, Miss Michele Muller might be coming over tonight, so I'm pretty much excited to get this day started.

Thanks for reading. Pictures later when I have the time / patience.

m.c.

Together and By Association...

Well hello there bloggers!

I've decided to begin a blog for my family to read to see what I'm up to, now that I'm in Philly more or less completely until May, 2008. I'll document my senior year (and maybe beyond) through words and pictures. This year I will continue to be on the Masque of La Salle e-board (my theatre group), Improv 101, and the President of the American Studies Association. I will also be applying for graduate school, hopefully studying American Studies.

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007- temp: 85 degrees. beautiful. slight breeze.

Before I get into today, I'll talk about the last four days, which is where summer really began.

Saturday, May 12th, 2007 - La Salle Bacculareate.
On Saturday, I was just sitting in my room (Basil 101, first floor), minding my own business, when I hear a tap at the window. Lo and behold, I find Amanda, K-Laz, and Pam at my window, with Pam giving me the "come here" finger. I tentatively walk towards my window when Liz jumps out! Liz has been in Ireland all semester and is one of my housemates this coming year and she wasn't supposed to come home until the 19th, so this was quite a surprise. Before I knew it, we were off to King of Prussia! We decided to go to Jessica McClintock and pretend that it was someone's wedding and we went with me. Although I don't have the picture of the ONE dress that I liked, I have some of the girls trying on their dresses:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/Rkp_hh-o1gI/AAAAAAAAAAM/VMygFAj7Qbg/s320/100_9902.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065000944965047810" />
K-Laz in the dress that she claimed "used every possible style".

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqAKB-o1hI/AAAAAAAAAAU/GADQevNnUaA/s320/100_9904.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065001640749749778" />
This is why I love Amanda.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqAcB-o1iI/AAAAAAAAAAc/HYbh5szuJwY/s320/100_9901.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065001949987395106" />
Pam in a dress that ISN'T from Limited Too (long and very funny story).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqAuh-o1jI/AAAAAAAAAAk/dMFVpKoZ0e4/s320/100_9906.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065002267814975026" />
Liz starring as a cupcake.

After we finished our fashion show, we headed to Friendly's for appetizers and ice cream. We returned to La Salle ready for a rest, so we watched Friends (Season 5, the episodes surrounding Monica and Chandlers secret relationship) until 10:15, when we were going on the last diner run of the year. This diner run was especially special because some soon-to-be graduates would be joining us and seeing Liz for the first time (little did they know!). It was really nice surprising Chris and Amy.

Sunday, May 13th 2007 - La Salle Graduation / The longest day ever.
Amanda and I had to be at work at 7:30am the next morning, as we were working for Angie in Guest and Conference Services. The day could have been long, but between being busy most of the day putting out hypothetical fires and helping Angie re-house 70 girls, and being there with my friends, which kept the mood light, the day flew by. We ended the night with a run to the famous Pat's Steaks (which is my personal favorite). Val and I split a "wiz witout" (which she ordered...props to her) and the night was good.

Monday, May 14th - Duty Training Day
10 am brought the first of many training days for the summer staff. The day could have been crappy and long, but Nicole, my RC, is pretty cool and kept things light and moving. Community Development also took us all out for lunch at the Valley Green Inn in Chestnut Hill and it was lovely. The food was good, the company was great, and the scenery was very un-Philadelphia.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqDVB-o1kI/AAAAAAAAAAs/JeTwoGzKbFg/s320/100_9914.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065005128263194178" />
The view from Valley Green Inn.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqDph-o1lI/AAAAAAAAAA0/xiSms7Jq6Os/s320/100_9916.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065005480450512466" />
Two of my co-hosts, Michal and Caitlin. These kids are great.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqD_R-o1mI/AAAAAAAAAA8/W8Vmr7PIZDU/s320/100_9917.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065005854112667234" />
George (long time friend and another co-host) playing with the ducks.

Afterwards, I took a long nap and Kate came to stay for the night. We had dinner, watched "The Big Chill" and 'Heroes', then slept after Leno's headlines.

Tuesday, May 15th - First day of Day ONE training / La Salle faculty and staff picnic.
At 9:30 this morning, we made our way to our first day of training, which was fairly painless. I'm figuring that a positive attitude will really get me through things that could be really crappy. At noon, we were dismissed to go the staff picnic on the quad, which is just like the one at the beginning of the year for the freshman move in only its almost adults and there's beer and wine. I didn't have any, as we had another 2 hours of training after lunch about leadership. There was hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, fruit, chips, and an ice cream truck! and really good music. We got out of our other training early, mainly because we were good and such, and we were able to go back to the picnic for a bit. This time I had a glass of boxed wine with ice in it. Classy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqF4R-o1nI/AAAAAAAAABE/wkP0FvO41Og/s320/100_9920.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065007932876838514" />
Michal and my roommate, Michelle (again, both Day ONE hosts).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U40Io9d6TXA/RkqGOR-o1oI/AAAAAAAAABM/6GaowMZKb-4/s320/100_9921.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065008310833960578" />
Me and Michal. I figured I should have at least one picture of myself.

That's really it. I should be off to bed now, as I have taping in the city for the Day ONE welcome video. I'm talking about the Betsy Ross house, but we're going all over the place. As much fun as I'm having, I'm already a little homesick, but I'll be home soon for various family events.

Feel free to comment and such. I love comments. They go to my email box and it's good. I'm on duty in St. Cassian hall tomorrow night (AKA "The House of Horrors!"), so I'll probably be really bored.

<3 megan colleen
